Math Textbook 2.2 #29

Add one pair of parenthesis or square brackets to the left side of each equation to make a true statement.
a.) 3.5x4.1-3.5-2.8=-0.7
b.) 2.5 + (-4.1) + (-2.3) x (-1.1) = 4.29
c.) -5.5-(-6.5) ÷ 2.4 + (-1.1) = -0.5

a.) 3.5x4.1-3.5-2.8=-0.7

Answer: 3.5x(4.1-3.5)-2.8=-0.7
                  (3.5x 0.6)-2.8=-0.7
                  2.1-2.8=-0.7
                   -0.7=-0.7

b.) 2.5 + (-4.1) + (-2.3) x (-1.1) = 4.29

Answer:  [2.5 + (-4.1) + (-2.3)] x (-1.1) = 4.29
                   [2.5-4.1-2.3] x (-1.1) = 4.29
                   [-1.6-2.3] x (-1.1) = 4.29
                         [-3.9] x (-1.1) = 4.29
                         -3.9x(-1.1)=4.29
                         4.29=4.29

      c.)  -5.5-(-6.5) ÷ 2.4 + (-1.1) = -0.5

      Answer:  -5.5-(-6.5) ÷ [2.4 + (-1.1)] = -0.5
                        -5.5+6.5 ÷ [2.4-1.1] = -0.5
                        -5.5+6.5 ÷ [1.3] = -0.5
                        -5.5+(6.5 ÷ 1.3)= -0.5
                        -5.5+5=-0.5
                        -0.5=-0.5
