Ryan's math blog post

Today we learned about triangles.

Scalene: all sides, all angles are different

Isosceles: 2 sides, 2 angles the same

Equilateral: all sides, all angles the same

An example of finding the area of a triangle:

We also learned more about solving algebraic expressions.
For example: 2(5+x)= 2(5) + 2(x)

= 10 + 2x

A common mistake is adding or subtracting 10 by 2x because they are unlike terms.

A new diagram for finding the answer of 2(5+x) is:

Inside the box, the top part is the expression and the bottom part is the answer.

Another example is: 2x(3x^2 + 4x -y)

=6x^3 + 8x^2 - 2xy

Question # 3 - Ryan Bautista

# 3 Hakim and Joe bought a large pizza. They split it in half. Joe ate 7/10 of his half. Hakim ate 7/8 of his half. How much pizza did each person eat? Express your answers as fractions in lowest terms.

Since there is the word "of" , it means you have to multiply.

Joe

I multiplied 7/10 by 1/2 because 10 is half of what he ate. The amount of pizzas he ate is 7/20.

Hakim

I multiplied 7/8 by 1/2 because 8 is half of what he ate. The amount of pizzas he ate is 7/16.

Chapter 2.3 Question 12 - Ryan Bautista

12. In the table, a positive number shows how many hours the time in a location is ahead of the time in London, England. A negative number shows how many hours the time s behind the time in London.

Location Time zone

Alice Springs, Australia 9 1/2
Brandon, Manitoba -6
Chathah Islands, New Zealand 12 3/4
Istanbul, Turkey 2
Kathmandu, Nepal 5 3/4
London, England 0
Mumbai, India 5 1/2
St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador -3 1/2
Tokyo, Japan 9
Victoria, British Columbia -8

a)How many hours is the time in St. Johns ahead of the time in Brandon?
St. Johns is ahead of Brandon by 3 1/2 hours.

b)How many hours is the time in Victoria behind the time in Mumbai?
Victoria is behind Mumbai by 13 1/2 hours.

c)Determine and interpret the time difference between Tokyo and Kathmandu?
The difference between Tokyo is Kathmandu is 4 3/4

d)Determine and interpret the time difference between Chatham Islands and St. Johns.
The difference is 2 1/4

e)In which location is the time exactly halfway between the times in Istanbul and Alice Springs?
The location is 3 1/2

Addend+Addend=Sum
Minuend-Subtrahend=Difference
Factor+Factor=Product
Dividend/Divisor=Quotient

10x1000=10 000 0.1x1000=100
10x100=1 000 0.1x100=10
10x10=100 0.1x10=1
10x1=10 0.1x1=0.1
10x0.1=1 0.1x0.1=0.01
10x0.01=0.1 0.1x0.01=0.001
10x0.001=0.01 0.1x0.001=0.0001
10x0.0001=0.001 0.1x0.0001=0.00001

A good way to multiply hard decimals is:
121 1.21
x13 x1.3
----- ------
363 1.573
1210
-------
1573

A rule for multiplying decimals could be: Add how many decimal places are in each factor to get the decimal place value in the product.

Examples:
1 + 1 = 2
0.2x0.2=0.04
3 + 3 = 6
0.111x0.1111=0.012321
4 + 4 = 8
0.1111x0.1111=0000.01234321

100/10=10 0.001/0.1=0.01
10/10=1 0.01/0.1=0.1
1/10=0.1 0.1/0.1=1
0.1/10=0.01 1/0.1=10
0.01/10=0.001 10/0.1=100
0.001/10=0.0001 100/0.1=1 000

A rule for dividing decimals could be: Subtract how many decimal places are in the dividend and divisor to get the decimal place value in the quotient.

Examples:
2 - 1 = 1
0.02/0.4=0.5
2 - 3 = -1
0.02/0.006=3.33..
